Mother's Day from Across the Miles
Celebrating Mother’s Day isn’t as easy when you and your mom live far apart. What could have been a day of dining and shopping gets substituted for a long phone call. But you can still create ways to make the day special, even when it’s from across the miles. Start some new traditions this Mother’s Day that are just for the two of you.
A Mother’s Day Collection
Start a recipe box for your mom that is based on your finest selections. Pull out a couple of recipes that you’ve either created yourself or have discovered somewhere and love to make. Print out or write up each of these recipes on a colored index card. Date each one and add any special tips that you use, where you discovered the recipe, and what makes a great side dish. Buy a small recipe box and put the cards inside as the start of a growing collection. You can save this collection for a Mother’s Day tradition or add to it with new recipes on her birthday and Christmas, as well.
Your Own Book Club
Another fun activity that you both can share despite the time difference is having your own book club. Pick out a book that is a good match for you and your mom’s tastes. Buy one book for you and another for a Mother’s Day gift. Include a note your mom’s book stating that this is the start of your new book club. Both of you can email back and forth or discuss on your regular phone chats what you think of the story’s plot as you go along. Take turns in who chooses the next book each month. Remember to also look for books on online bookstores for good deals.
Wrap up these two personal and creative gifts and put them out in the mail so that your mom is sure to get them before Mother’s Day. Let her know ahead of time that she should call you when she opens her gift, so you can talk about the new traditions as she unwraps them.
Living far apart can be difficult when a mother and daughter are close, but Mother’s Day can still be a day for both of you to celebrate. Start some new traditions such as these that can be enjoyed and shared all year to help the two of you can keep close despite the miles.
